Here you will find M+A's guide to local culinary delights. We'll
give you the low-down on where "everyone who's anyone"
is dining.
We also recommend that you take a look at Peter's article, An
Ugly Day of Wine Tasting before wondering into a winery or venturing
into a vineyard.
Here are the current restaurant reviews:
Trimana Cafeteria
Lobby of 5757 W. Century Blvd.
"How do they do it?" wonder fans of this "spectacular
deal" continental cuisine cafeteria. This gem of a lobby cafe
has definitely made its mark. Non-believers who show up during any
lunch time rush will witness the hoards of building tenants who
come for the convenience, but return because it's easier than walking
down the street to Carl's Jr. Although the salads-by-the-pound run
about as much as an Italian sports car, they are definitely a "perennial
favorite" among the time-constrained patrons. And this year,
Trimana was voted the building's Most Popular restaurant; P.S. needless
to say, prepare for the "daunting crowds."
Ammo
Located in an unpleasant section of Hollywood (Highland, south
of santa Monica Blvd.), and mentioned in every gossip column as
the restaurant of choice of Mick Jagger and Elisabeth Hurley, this
simple, cool and trendy restaurant serves great healthy oriented
food and relaxing ambiance. Check out the Vegetarian Lasagna, the
pizza and, above all, get plenty of flat bread and olive oil to
munch while waiting for your food.
Friendly service, great for a quick lunch or an intimate dinner.
Appetizers $ 7-9
Entrees $ 12-15
The Little Door
Still a scene after more than 4 years (the average lifespan of
a trendy-hip-cool restaurant in LA seems to be 3 years -- i.e. Atlantic,
Christopher Ciccone's THC spot on Beverly Blvd), the Little Door
has managed to constantly offer a cozy, welcoming patio, reliable,
good food and a big parade of celebrities -- like Mick Jagger whom
I spotted a couple of Friday nights ago. Try the Roquefort/caramelized
pecan/peach salad, perfect on summer night, the spicy tuna tartar
or the couscous. I'm not crazy about their dessert menu, except
for the flourless walnut choc cake - sinful.
Appetizers $ 8-15
Entrees $ 18-30
Urth Cafe
A cross between a Starbuck's and a neighborhood restaurant, Urth
offers the best lattes, cappuccinos ands caffeine blends in town.
Soups, salads and sandwiches are large and tasty and the ratio price/quality
excellent. Busy at all time of day, it is particularly difficult
to get a table on the patio after 9. Great celebrity spotting.
Very reasonably priced
